Return of the Montrose Night Challenge

Welcome back to another exciting season of the Montrose cricket and netball challenge.

The Montrose Primary School U11 Night Cricket and Netball Challenge kicked off at the school on October 13 with an invigorating opening ceremony.

Over 500 learners from 14 schools and two cricket clubs took part in this year’s season of the prestigious inter-primary schools’ sporting challenge.

The participating primary schools at this year’s netball night challenge are: Bryandale, Bryneven, Crawford Fourways, Crawford Lonehill, Crawford Sandton, Curro Aurora, Dainfern, Grayston, Heron Bridge, Montrose, Reddam Waterfall, Redhill, Rivonia and Steyn City.

Schools participating in this year’s cricket challenge are: Bryandale, Bryneven, Crawford Lonehill, Crawford Sandton, Dainfern, Grayston, Heron Bridge, Montrose, Redhill and Rivonia. The schools’ teams were joined by two clubs: Alex Hub and KPT Lions.

The netball tournament was characterised by eight rounds of high-octane athleticism.

All the netball teams played three games each. The Redhill primary U11 netball team sits at the top of the scoreboard, having won all their games.

On the sports field, 12 cricket teams are set to square off against one another in four pools of fast-paced cricket. Eight teams played in the first four games of the tournament. Each game was characterised by 20 overs per match.

Grayston scored 282 runs without a loss in 20 overs, beating Crawford Sandton by 165 runs to win the first game.

Rivonia won the second game versus Alex Hub by nine wickets, reaching the total of 209 runs set by Alex hub in 11.4 overs.

The host school Montrose bested the KPT Lions club (all out) by 141 runs, scoring 275 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

Bryandale won the fourth game by four wickets, scoring 177 runs for the loss of five wickets by the end of the game.

Montrose Primary School’s principal Sonnet Van Loggerenberg hailed the Night Challenge as being the biggest inter-primary sporting event in South Africa for the past 20 years.

“It transcended from just cricket, into a cricket and netball event,” said Van Loggerenberg. “As you can see it’s a carnival of cricket and netball, a great family event that draws over 25 000 spectators to it on an annual basis, [with] multiple sponsors.”

A fireworks display at sunset signified the official opening of this year’s Montrose Night Challenge event.
