Rubbish piles up as ELM trucks stand inactive

The trucks are not collecting refuse because the municipality is unable to make payments to service providers, who in turn confiscated the keys to these trucks.

SEBOKENG. – The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) rubbish removal trucks are standing idle and gathering dust at the Emfuleni Waste Department depot in Sebokeng. This, it is said, is because the trucks’ keys have been confiscated by the service providers as ELM cannot pay for their services. The trucks are said to be in working condition.

Residents have complained in some places in the area that waste stands over, not being removed by the municipality, sometimes for weeks on end, resulting in people being exposed to illegal garbage dumps. The Democratic Alliance’s Dady Mollo said that he will write to ELM mayor, Jacob Khawe to call on him to ensure that refuse removal takes place constantly in the municipality.

“The trucks are not collecting refuse because the municipality is unable to make payments to service providers, who in turn confiscated the keys to these trucks. The DA understands that the service providers will only allow the municipality to use these trucks once payment is brought up to date. We call on the Mayor of Emfuleni to step in and handle this matter urgently.” At the time of going to print an enquiry, sent to the ELM on the matter, had not been responded to.
