SEDIBENG.- Excitement was in the air when team South Africa arrived at OR Tambo on Monday evening from Tricolour Games held in Italy.
Sedibeng youngsters were also part of the South African team that participated in this annual Soncini Social Cohesion Games which started at the district level and to the provincial level. Some of the Sedibeng athletes who brought medals home in the chess category are Omphile Majola from Mohloli Maritime SOS in Sharpeville and Ngelosi Maloyi from Kutlo-Tharo Secondary School in Zone 3, Sebokeng.
Majola from Sharpeville Chess Club brought home a gold medal while Maloyi from Emfuleni Chess Club brought home a bronze medal. The players were warmly welcomed at OR Tambo International Airport by their families, relatives, and friends among other people. It was hugs, kisses, and congratulations as they arrived for their achievements.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Emfuleni Chess Association, Lefu Lepota congratulates these young athletes. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that these young athletes did very well despite being the first time they competed at the international level.

“I think we did wonders because going out there to compete against the countries that are having grant masters in number we performed well. We were up against well-resourced countries and coming home with gold and bronze medals tells you a lot about our talent. We must be very proud of our home talent going out there and making their presence be felt at that level deserves a pat on their shoulders for a job well done. As Emfuleni Chess Association, we congratulate all the athletes who represented Sedibeng in Tricolour Games and we are proud of them,” he concluded.
