The North-West University marked a historic milestone recently as student leaders hosted the first-ever Vanguard Gala Dinner, an elegant celebration of leadership, service and impact. Held at the Tsebonokeng Hall, the evening brought together student leaders from across the campus in a night filled with pride, reflection and recognition
What set this event apart was that it was an entirely student-led initiative pioneered by Dean Dube, a passionate student leader at the helm of the organising team. As her leadership term came to a close, Dube envisioned the gala dinner as a space to honour the often-unseen work of student leaders and celebrate the spirit of servant leadership on campus.
“This dinner was our way of saying thank you,” said Dube. “Student leaders work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, and this evening was about acknowledging that effort. It was the first of its kind at our campus, and I truly hope it becomes a lasting tradition.”
Chris Williams, director for Student Life at the Vanderbijlpark Campus, praised both the leaders being honoured and the students who brought the event to life.
“This event is a shining example of what student leadership looks like at its very best,” said Williams. “It was envisioned and executed by students – for students. I am incredibly proud of Dean and her team. This initiative reflects a culture of excellence, unity and vision that we want to continue nurturing on our campus.”
The much-anticipated awards ceremony celebrated outstanding contributions across several categories, recognising both individual excellence and collective achievement. Cheers and applause echoed through the venue as names were announced and student leaders walked the stage, beaming with pride and joy.
“The response was overwhelming,” added Dube. “So many students said they finally felt seen, appreciated and celebrated. That was the goal – and I believe we achieved it.”
Dube said with strong support from the student community and university leadership, there is every indication that the event will become a proud annual tradition at NWU.
