Body of newborn baby discovered at Ironside dumping site

DE DEUR – The police in De Deur are investigating a case of concealment of birth after the body of a newborn baby girl was discovered at a local dumping site in Ironside. The discovery, which shocked community members, was on September 13.

Concealment of birth is a crime in South Africa. It involves intentionally disposing of the body of a newborn with the intent to conceal the fact of its birth, or a parent failing to report the birth of a stillborn or newborn child to the authorities.

Police spokesperson Constable Mampho Mahlomola explains that the unclothed infant was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.

“This is a deeply disturbing incident. Such acts will not be tolerated,” said Mahlomola.

“The investigation is currently underway, and we are committed to ensuring that the person responsible is brought to justice,” Mahlomola added.

The body was taken to Sebokeng Forensic Pathology Services. De Deur SAPS is appealing to the public for any information related to the incident to assist the investigation.
