Council whip crashes expensive municipal car

Metsimaholo Local Municipality spokesperson revealed to Ster that the municipality is still awaiting the official accident report, which will provide a verified and comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SASOLBURG – A municipal vehicle used by Metsimaholo Local Municipality Council Whip Fikile Mosokweni has been involved in a crash in Deneysville. The accident happened on February 7.

Sources claim that Mosokweni, an ANC councillor, was driving the vehicle.

“It is still shocking and surprising that his driver and bodyguard provided by the municipality were not with him at the time of the accident,” said the source.

The vehicle was purchased in October 2025 specifically for him. Speaking to Ster, municipal spokesperson Dr. Gino Alberts confirmed the crash and said that the matter has been formally reported to authorities.

“The incident was formally reported in line with standard procedure,” Alberts said. While the incident has been reported, Alberts said key details surrounding the circumstances of the crash remain under wraps.

“At this stage, the municipality is still awaiting the official accident report, which will provide a verified and comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding the incident. It would therefore be premature and potentially misleading to draw definitive conclusions before the release of that report,” Alberts added.

While speculation has begun circulating in political and community circles, the municipality has urged the public to remain calm.

“What can be stated with certainty is that the municipality does not condone any conduct that would violate the law, municipal policy, or governance prescripts. Should the official findings indicate any breach of protocol or misconduct, the appropriate processes will be followed without fear or favour,” Alberts concluded.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Josephine Rani, confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving is under investigation following a motor vehicle accident.

Ster attempted to reach out to Mosokweni for a right of reply.

Several messages went without an answer. At the time of publishing this article, Mosokweni had not commented on the matter.
