NWU Convocation Braai celebrates legacy
The Convocation Braai strengthened alumni connections with North-West University and sparked discussions on giving back and contributing to its future growth.
The Big Lapa at the North-West University (NWU) Vanderbijlpark Campus came alive with energy and shared memories recently as members of the NWU Convocation gathered for a special braai event. The evening, the brainchild of Convocation president Tutu Kgobane, brought together graduates from different generations to reconnect, reflect on their personal journeys, and strengthen their lifelong ties with the university.
Returning to their alma mater, attendees celebrated both their personal and professional achievements since graduation. The event served as a powerful reminder of a shared history and collective identity, highlighting the ongoing responsibility of graduates to contribute to the future of the institution.
Prof. Leenta Grobler directed the evening’s programme, which was designed to blend inspiration, entertainment, and engagement. During his welcoming address, Mr Kgobane encouraged members to remain active ambassadors for the university, noting that an institution is defined by the graduates who carry its values into the world. He emphasised that the success of the alumni continues to strengthen the legacy of the NWU.
Guests were also briefed on the university’s latest developments by Prof. Jeffery Mphahlele, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Community Engagement, and Postgraduate Studies, and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations. Prof. Mphahlele highlighted institutional progress in research and innovation, stressing the university’s commitment to producing knowledge that addresses real societal needs.
The theme of giving back was a central focus of the evening. Silvanus Welcome, the director of Development and Fundraising, spoke about philanthropy and how alumni can support current students through funding, mentorship, and long-term engagement. He urged members to view giving back as a holistic contribution that involves sharing their time, expertise, and leadership, rather than just providing financial support.
Adding to the discussion on institutional relationships, Nicolize van der Walt reflected on the importance of keeping alumni connected, involved, and well-informed through dedicated communication platforms.
Entertainment throughout the evening added vibrancy and celebration to the programme, creating a lively atmosphere that balanced reflection with joy.
As the formal proceedings concluded, Convocation Exco bursar Mr Mpho Mosia delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all organisers, speakers, Convocation members, and guests for their contribution to the success of the event.
Event organiser Zanele Ngobese said the reunion exceeded all expectations and reaffirmed the strength of the NWU community. She described it as heartwarming to see different generations sharing memories, noting that the atmosphere was filled with pride and a genuine sense of belonging.
“Events like these remind us that being part of the NWU family does not end at graduation. The bond remains strong for years, and this reunion showed the importance of maintaining those relationships.”
