Vanderbijlpark man convicted of animal cruelty

In March 2022, 12 dogs were found starved and in poor condition at a residential property in SE7.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – A Vanderbijlpark has been found guilty on 4 counts of animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act more than 11 months after 12 dogs were rescued from a residential property in SE7.

At the time an urgent court order had to be obtained from the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court to enable the SPCA team to enter the property and seize the dogs and take them into custody.

According to the local SPCA’s Marlien de Klerk the dogs were also very skittish and scared of humans.

“Their living conditions were extremely dirty and they did not have access to food or clean water. Some in desperate need of veterinary treatment.”

The Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court gave Selebalo Molefe (37) a hefty fine of R10 000 or 7 months’ imprisonment.

The court also made an additional cost order against Molefe whereby he has to pay the veterinary expenses incurred by the SPCA in the matter.

Inspector Lycinda Visser of the SPCA had to testify in the case on behalf of the State, after the owner pleaded guilty to the charges.
