SEDIBENG.- Much has been said and written before the 2010 Soccer World Cup. South Africa went on to host a successful tournament, the first ever on African soil.
But this is a topic for another day!
Sedibeng, formerly known as Vaal Triangle, was part of this historic moment, with football powerhouses like the Ivory Coast using George Thabe Stadium as their training ground.
There was hype all over the country with people, companies, businesses, and soccer fans waiting in anticipation to welcome visitors from around the world.
Some people even went to the extent of borrowing money from banks and turning their homes into B&Bs, lured by promises of economic opportunity. However, only a few individuals from the poorest communities saw the benefits.
Shame on you!
Some people were left drowning in a pool of debt.
The sad reality is that the 2010 World Cup never benefited many of us in this country, except those stadia that have since become white elephants.
Here in the Vaal, George Thabe Stadium was the most beautiful venue, and Zakes’ Sports Corner believed it would stay that way. But I was wrong. Several projects formed part of this World Cup legacy, including the installation of big screen TVs for soccer fans to watch the tournament at venues like George Thabe Stadium and Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre. Now, can we talk about those big screens for a second?
Of course we can!
Zakes’ Sports Corner is not sure whether those screens still exist or where they were initially stored. From what Zakes’ Sports Corner gathered, some of those screens went missing, though this still needs to be properly investigated.
Zakes’ Sports Corner has been told that some of those screens ended up in the hands of individuals within the community who work in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
But again, Zakes’ Sports Corner doesn’t want to rush to conclusions.
This is not an attempt to start trouble. No!
