Operation Shanela 2 nets suspects in Sedibeng

Law enforcement officials conducted 561 individual searches.

SEDIBENG: On February 19, the SAPS conducted a high-impact, crime-combating operation with the execution of Operation Shanela, focusing on the Sebokeng policing precinct.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane, said that the collaborative efforts of all participating units yielded significant results, culminating in the apprehension of 143 suspects for various criminal offenses.

Mokhachane added that before the operation, detectives from across the district were instrumental in securing 103 arrests, which included suspects linked to gender-based violence cases.

“On the day of the operation, 40 suspects were arrested as a strong focus on visible policing was maintained. It included an intensified deployment to enforce liquor compliance regulations, trace wanted suspects, and execute law enforcement patrols in known hotspots. A strategic roadblock was also placed in Golden Highway, reinforcing operational teams deployed across Sedibeng, resulting in the arrest of 32 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently undergoing processing for court proceedings and deportation.”

Law enforcement officials conducted 561 individual searches.

Approximately 253 vehicles were searched, of which 41 were checked to determine their status in relation to theft and hijackings. During these patrols, five suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, and two for selling liquor without a valid liquor license.

Traffic law enforcement also formed a key part of the operation, whereby officers issued 55 AARTO infringement notices valued at R25 000 for various road traffic violations.

A random school search was conducted at Thuto Tiro Engineering School of Specialization in Zone 10, and the learners were also warned to refrain from any illegal activities.

An urgent community engagement was held in Zone 17, where the management of Sedibeng District, led by Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu, assisted with community concerns regarding crime in the area.

The District Commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, extended her gratitude to all SAPS members, involved stakeholders, and community patrollers for their dedication and unwavering support.
