Mediclinic Emfuleni celebrates World Prematurity Day

World Prematurity Day commemorated at Mediclinic Emfuleni

VANDERBIJLPARK – Mediclinic Emfuleni commemorated World Prematurity Day, officially observed on November 17, with a heartfelt celebration on November 21 honouring the smallest fighters and their dedicated caring teams.

The theme: Give preterm babies a strong start for a brighter future, set the tone for a day filled with reflection, gratitude, and hope.

Staff from the Obstetric and Neonatal units showed their support by wearing purple, the official colours for Prematurity Day, demonstrating solidarity with preterm babies and their families.

Paediatrician Dr Matsela Pelo, Sr Daphne Sagi from the Neonatal Unit, and specialists in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech therapy shared valuable insights into the care that helps babies thrive from the very start.

A highlight of the day was the prize-giving ceremony, where each baby received a certificate of bravery, presented by Dr Kazadi Mbamba, Dr Pelo, and the Unit Manager for Obstetrics and Neonatal, Sr. Phumi Mokoena, in recognition of their courage and progress.

Client Experience Manager Anri van Zyl says, “Families enjoyed lucky draws and goodie bags, adding a joyful touch to the meaningful celebration. Through events like this, Mediclinic Emfuleni continues to shine a light on the strength of preterm babies and the vital role of compassionate, multidisciplinary care, helping create strong starts for brighter futures.”

The event highlighted the resilience of preterm babies, the dedication of the healthcare teams, and the determination of families who walk this journey alongside them.
