Men encouraged to support ‘Movember’
November, which has been dubbed “Movember”, is a month dedicated to raising awareness of men's health issues.
Staff at Khanya Hospice in Umkomaas were delighted when Durban finalist in the 2020 Mr India South Africa competition, Jaston Jairam (17), contacted them to offer his support for the month of November.

During this month, men are encouraged to grow their beards and moustaches to draw attention to these issues, and to raise funds for charity.
Although Jaston is currently writing his matric exams in Chatsworth, he is committed to helping hospice and challenges men of all ages to have themselves tested, particularly for prostate and testicular cancer.
“Many men put off being tested, saying that they will get around to it, but what they don’t realise is that it is important because symptoms may only occur as the disease progresses,” said Khanya Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald.
“Early detection is the key here.”
Jaston has also challenged Neil to see who can get the most number of men to pledge their support for Khanya Hospice during Movember.

An independent judge will oversee the contest and decide on the winner.
The person who pledges the largest sum will win a prize.
“And should people not be able to make cash donations, they can always show their support by growing a beard or moustache, and getting male friends and family to do likewise,” said Neil.
