Ramsgate woman convicted of theft

Roelandi du Plessis (22) from Ramsgate was recently sentenced in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court to one year imprisonment or a R10 000 fine, suspended for five years, for stealing from her Margate employer in 2019.

Du Plessis pleaded guilty to stealing an amount of R8 920 and was ordered to compensate the business for the stolen amount.

During sentencing, Magistrate Vuyokazi Diza said that Du Plessis had been convicted of a serious crime.

“This will haunt her for the rest of her life since she now has a criminal record. What makes matters worse is that she was in a trust relationship with her employer and she literally bit the hand that fed her.

“This is not a crime where you wake up in the morning and decide to accidently steal money. This is premeditated and has taken place over a period of time.

“If she was in dire straits she could have approached the employer for assistance instead of stealing.”
