Injured Cape Gannet rescued off Port Edward dies
Despite all efforts of the veterinary team to save the bird, it died earlier this afternoon (Monday).
While walking on the beach, a couple were handed a Cape Gannet by a member of the public last Sunday.
The Cape Gannet appeared to be weak and barely responsive.
They contacted NSRI Port Edward and their crew were dispatched to investigate. The Marine Stranding Network, Ushaka Sea World in Durban and the Lower South Coast SPCA were also alerted.
“The couple had taken the Cape Gannet home. Crew from the NSRI arrived at their home and took the bird into our care and transported the bird to a local vet, Dr Leon Bruggerman, at Margate Veterinary Hospital,” said Gert du Plessis, NSRI Port Edward station commander.
The bird was treated for a possible infection and rehydrated and kept in the care of Margate Veterinary Hospital.
Sadly, despite all efforts from the veterinary team, the bird died earlier this afternoon (Monday).
‘It was doing great this morning but slowly deteriorated, but it had air under his skin, which showed he had trauma (injury),” the veterinary hospital reported.
