Umzinto radio station builds fan base
Nitha said that the radio station is a subsidiary for the NPO, Mid South Coast Promise Foundation.
Multicultural online radio station Mid South Coast (MSC) Radio, based at Bhai Plaza mall in Umzinto, has been growing and steadily building its fan base since its establishment on October 31 last year.
Founder of MSC Radio and Umzinto local, Nitha Harripersadh, stated that the MSC Radio journey hasn’t been an easy one, but the team has been able to overcome many challenges (including load shedding) and was still progressing by the day.
“Even on our launch day, we had to deal with heavy rain, but that didn’t stop us,” she said.
Nitha said that the radio station is a subsidiary for the NPO, Mid South Coast Promise Foundation.
“The station is very community driven and we have programmes and talk shows which expose local talent, uplift people, address service delivery matters and so much more.”
The presenters are there on a volunteer basis and the station is open to welcoming more people to the team.
There have already been talks about persuading retired teachers to have a talk show where they can provide pupils with online classes as not everyone has the funds for extra tuition.
MSC Radio also prioritises the youth and is looking for people to introduce youth programmes online.
“We’re an open and honest radio station that is willing to listen and respond to what our listeners want and will try our best to produce content suitable for everyone,” said Nitha.
Radio content is produced in numerous languages such as English, isiZulu, Tamil, Hindi, Afrikaans and Xhosa.
Funding, as with many other NPOs, is currently an issue, as well as reeling in advertisers.
To get more exposure and find potential sponsors and advertisers while simultaneously helping the community, MSC Radio is planning a charity car show event soon. Details will follow in time.
The radio station is also making an appeal for sponsorship towards a recording studio which will benefit local artists in the area as well.
