The mandir stands as a symbol of spiritual harmony, it has become an integral part of the Hindu community.

The Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir in lower Albersville celebrated its 85th anniversary recently.

At the same time, members and devotees also enjoyed the vibrant celebration of Akand Hanuman Chalisa, which was attended by locals and visitors from Durban and surrounds. Over the years, the mandir has played a vital role in fostering unity, promoting cultural diversity, enriching the lives of many individuals and contributing to the integration of diverse communities. The mandir stands as a symbol of spiritual harmony and has become an integral part of the Hindu community of Port Shepstone.

Veena Lakhan, the chairperson, said the mandir is one of the oldest on the South Coast and serves not only as a place of worship but also as a meeting place for the community. In the early days, people gathered there after a hard day’s work in the cane fields and the sugar processing plant.

“Our community was auctioned to local farmers while others were on contract to farmers, all of whom suffered greatly, including working under difficult conditions. Our temple served to build unity, to offer support and guidance and as a hub from which they could communicate with their homeland. Today, circumstances have changed, needs have changed, but the core purpose of serving our community still remains,” said Veena.

She added that as a non-profit organisation, the mandir continues to assist the community with the celebration of festivals, offering guidance and comfort.

It also observed Hanuman Jayanthi on Tuesday last week.
