OPINION: ‘Mining hampers Umzumbe residents’

The mining companies are not honouring their obligation to water the road regularly to alleviate the incessant dust.

DEAR Editor,-

Over the years we have observed mining companies mining sand from Umzumbe River.

Throughout the process, we have seen gradual destruction of natural resources, including precious water.

We have sadly watched the destruction of natural fish ponds and bird sanctuaries.

The health of the community has been compromised by the dust caused by trucks transporting sand via the Fairview Mission road in Umzumbe.

Children walking to local schools are unsafe because of the pure volume of traffic on the road.

Fortunately speed bumps have been placed on the road.

Residents are also having a problem with mining companies that are not honouring their obligation to water the road regularly – to alleviate the incessant dust.

I plead with mining companies to comply with their obligations before the situation gets out of hand.
