OPINION: ‘Saree remains a timeless fashion piece’

It is six metres long, deftly pleated with the fingers and tucked into an underskirt.

DEAR Editor;

My friend and I were discussing fashion.

We agree that there is no better dress than the saree.

The Indian Bollywood stars wear it in so many ways because it is versatile.

It is six metres long, deftly pleated with the fingers and tucked into an underskirt.

No safety pins mind you.

A matching blouse goes beautifully.

Sometimes the blouse is an off the shoulder, sleeveless or a boob tube.

If you are slim, you can show off your midriff.

Some youngsters expose their belly button, which is always pierced.

Whether you are thin, short, fat or tall, you can still pull off a saree.

There are hundreds of designs to choose from which include peacocks, elephants and the popular paisley pattern.

The different states in India have their own colours and textures of sarees, from silk to cotton.

My wedding saree is still going strong after 50 years.

I said to my friend, “When I leave to the other world, she must send it with me so that my partner recognises me.”
