OPINION: ‘Failed second statutory meeting, brought on by a failing ANC’

Opposition parties took their seats and were ready to conduct the business of the day, but without a quorum, where left with no option but to suspend the meeting again.

DEAR Editor;

The ANC Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) caucus failed to attend the second statutory meeting of RNM, leaving the municipality without a mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip.

The municipality is also left without an executive committee, that acts as the recess committee, tasked with the day to day running of the municipality during recess.

Opposition parties took their seats and were ready to conduct the business of the day, but without a quorum, where left with no option but to suspend the meeting again.

Not only did this stop the statutory meeting, however it also stopped an ordinary sitting of council to undertake council business. Sources say the ANC cannot agree on a mayoral candidate, once again proving that the party does not have the interests of the municipality at heart but rather that of personal jockeying for positions.

The Democratic Alliance will contest these positions and have candidates who are fit for purpose and are ready to serve.

We call upon the ANC to stop its internal battles and to do what is right for the communities of the RNM, to attend the third attempt at a statutory meeting, so that leadership can be installed, an executive committee can be ratified, and we can get on with the business of service delivery to the residents of RNM.

It is ultimately the speaker Cllr ZP Mzindle’s responsibility that the council meeting occurs. The Democratic Alliance clarified the steps she should take in the ity of Tshwane Constitutional Court case. We call on her to take action.
