OPINION: ‘Sad farewell to residents’ ‘best friend’

At night she cried at our door to be let in and, eventually, she slept on her bed next to my wife Merlehelen.

DEAR Editor; When we moved to Sappers’ Glen retirement village nearly six years ago we were introduced to Lizzie, who belonged to the then general manager, Gerry Gregory.

Although she belonged to Gerry, she used to wander around the Glen, with many folk often giving her lunch or something off the braai.

At night she cried at our door to be let in and, eventually, she slept on her bed next to my wife Merlehelen. As she got older she then decided to spend her days with our neighbours Roy and Lynda Weatherill.

Most folk in the Glen knew her and as she grew older she didn’t wander around that often but she did move into our hearts.

As age crept up on her she wasn’t as active as she used to be and she spent days with Lynda and Roy and spent nights with us. We estimated her age at 18 or 19.

Eventually, we realised that she couldn’t see or hear and she was in pain, so it was time for us to say ‘good bye’ – four hearts were broken as she left us on Monday last week.

The staff and Dr Ziska Bekker at the Vet Hospital (Bulwer Street) were very compassionate, sending us a lovely poem, and deserve our sincere thanks.
