Lizzie lights up Interclub

Overall it was a fantastic tournament, with around 240 players over the three days.

Lizzie Currie (Southbroom) and Tania Lyon (Eshowe) won the KwaZulu-Natal Ladies Interclub golf tournament at Port Shepstone Country Club last weekend.

It was a third title for Lizzie, but a first for her as a Southbroom member.

In the past, she has won twice with Kim Strauss, at Empangeni and at Selborne, when representing Port Shepstone.

Tania has also won it before, with Nichole Martyn of Richards Bay.

“Being the only woman golfer who plays tournaments at Eshowe, it’s always a bit difficult finding a partner,” she said, hence the allowance for two players from different clubs to team up.

There was a tie in the bronze division, with two teams sharing the honours. Union president Jean Freeman congratulates (from left) Solange Fox and Irene Schanda of Southbroom Golf Club and Grace Fourie and Rina Rito of Margate Country Club.

Lizzie was pleased with the outcome, especially returning to her former club.

“It means a lot, to win it for Southbroom, and at a course where I learnt my golf,” she said.

It was the first time her and Tania had played foursomes together, despite having played a fair amount of tournament golf together.

They shot 85 the first day to trail Kim and Nicola Gutzeit (formerly Eaton) by four shots.

Nicola is back playing amateur golf and by all accounts, really enjoying it.

On day two, Lizzie and Tania switched teeing off order and it seemed to help things.

They shot 78, including an eagle on the par five 7th, to set up a nine shot swing over the leaders, who slumped to an 87 as the wind picked up.

On day three, there was no movement at the top of the leaderboard, with the top three pairs all shooting 81 on a sweltering hot day.

“We played solidly and would liked to have broken 80 again, but our putting let us down a bit. There was quite a lot of wind, but it wasn’t impossible,” said Tania.

Overall it was a fantastic tournament, with around 240 players over the three days. And, as is always the case with the women, they sure know how to run a tournament and have fun at the same time.

“It was an awesome week and full credit to the Port Shepstone women for a beautifully run event which was a load of fun,” she said.
