Birdies and blow-outs at Southern KZN Open

One of the highlights of the day was a hole-in-one on the 4th in the afternoon by Jarred Good (Empangeni). He also eagled the 18th for a flying finish.

There was a bit of everything at this year’s Southern KwaZulu-Natal Open golf championships, played at the scenic Selborne Park Golf Club last Sunday.

Clayton Mansfield of Durban Country Club provided the class, triumphing on the second extra hole – in fading light – over defending champion Jason Broomhead, who is also a member at Durban CC.

Both these players finished on -6 for the day, with the course playing short, but tricky in the wind.

Jason Gilliver (Umdoni Park) was third on -4, just needing a hotter putter in the morning, with Lindani Mthiyane (Umkomaas) fourth on +2.

One of the highlights of the day was a hole-in-one on the 4th in the afternoon by Jarred Good (Empangeni). He also eagled the 18th for a flying finish.

There was some mishaps during the day, too.

Tom Lovett (Prince’s Grant) was solid in the morning and sore in the afternoon. He twisted his knee the day before trying to stop a mate’s ball going in the hazard during a social game. He almost stopped after 18, but gutsed it out for a fifth place finish.

Jono Broomhead (Durban CC) had been in the for much of the day, until the 8th hole in the afternoon, where his football skills displayed may warrant a call from Manchester United manager, José Mourinho.

Broomhead missed a short putt and leaned over to tap it back into the hole. The only problem was that the ball hopped over the hole and then bounced off his golf shoe!

Jan McDermott (Toti) was one under par for his afternoon round with three holes to go, but it fell apart when he made a 10 on the 16th hole!

B division honours went to Eugene Mbambo (Amanzimtoti) on 67 points, with Graham Sole (Southbroom GC) next on 66 points, counting out Ganas Naicker (Umfolozi).

Sole’s father Gavin, a three-time past champion, emerged later on to watch him while riding a cart, having earlier withdrawn due to a stomach virus issue.

Graham Sole claimed second prize in the B division.

Sole jnr has shown a lot of improvement this year. If he keeps it up he’ll be a single figure golfer in no time.

Next best of the Southern KZN players in the A division were Mitch Hampson (Umdoni Park) and Sean Baker (Margate) just outside of the top 10 on scores of 154.

Robert Mavundla (Margate) was a shot further back on 154, with Graham Fabricius (Port Shepstone) one behind him.

It was also encouraging to see the emergence of some younger players, like James Coull (Port Shepstone) and Luke Cubitt (Selborne).

Luke’s twin brother Jack was forced to withdraw after having his appendix removed earlier in the week.
