Spotted eagle owl chicks nest discovered

Warner Beach teens rescue owls

THE two spotted eagle owls currently being cared for by Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) in Yellowwood Park were initially rescued by sisters, Anri and Tania Marais of Warner Beach.

The Sun reported on the rescued owls last week.

“On Tuesday, 16 July my daughters noticed an owl walking on the grass. As it was getting dark we thought it might be one of the big owls we have seen in a tree. However, looking at it for a while we noticed a second owl, both were small and unable to fly. At the time, we were unaware there was a nest in our tree. We phoned Crow and they told us to rescue them and take them to the wildlife centre,” said the girls’ mother, Louise.

“One owl fell on a retaining wall and into bushes trying to get away from us. Anri and Tania went into the bushes with a small torch to find and rescue the baby owl. It looked like this owl was hurt or scared. The bigger one was a bit aggressive. We brought both in and kept them in the bathroom in the dark, as not to stress them out.

The family later discovered the owls’ nest in a tree in the garden, containing a third baby owl which is doing well.
