Go-karter revved to ride at national event
Burning rubber at the go-kart nationals this weekend.
A Toti go-karter will pit his skills against the country’s best at a national event this weekend.
Rob Whiting (16) of Warner Beach will compete in a national karting event at Idube Raceway in Cato Ridge on Saturday, 10 August.
The Glenwood High School grade 11 pupil only started karting last year. “I have a passion for cars, so my dad Stanley asked me if I wanted to start karting,” he said. “This year he asked if I wanted to race.”
Rob raced four events at a national in Port Elizabeth in July and finished a creditable fifth in the last one. He races a 125cc kart in the Rotax senior max challenge class. “My competitors are from 15-years up, but I’m the youngest.”
Besides paddling for his school team, Rob also races a 600cc Honda superbike on occasion at Red Star Raceway in Johannesburg with his father. “I want to stick to four wheels for now as it is my passion. Motorbikes are my dad’s passion.”
The karts easily reach up to 110km/h and can clock a 1km lap around Idube in 45 seconds. “This will only be my second competitive event, but I hope to do well this weekend as it is my home event.”
