On Thursday, 8 August at about 8am, Toti Country Club manager, Dave Richardson discovered six concrete lamp posts along the road had been knocked over. “On Wednesday when I left the Country Club the lamp posts were all there, but on Thursday morning they were knocked flat and lying on the verge of the road,” said Dave.
“The copper isn’t of much value. Anything heavy can be used to knock the lamp posts down,” said eThekwini Municipality’s senior project officer, Ivan Worthington.
According to Ivan, the municipality has tried everything to curb copper theft on Golf Course Road. “The only way to combat this problem is to have security patrol the area,” said Ivan, which comes at a prohibitive cost.
He said the lamp posts on Golf Course Road would be repaired but that the municipality would look at other ways to solve the ongoing problem.
