Market day makes pupils money-savvy

THE rain on Friday, 18 October did not deter pupils of Gokul Primary School in Isipingo from participating in a market day to become more money savvy.

“The 4me Market Day Programme aims to empower the youth across the country, including pupils at Gokul Primary School. The programme seeks to instil an entrepreneurial spirit among the youth to help cultivate an enabling culture in our children from a young age, to foster a financially fit and savvy generation,” said managing executive of client engagement at Nedbank, Anton de Wet.

“The programme delivers curriculum-aligned content on entrepreneurship and financial fitness developed using educational materials. Pupils will receive a kit which teachers will incorporate in the school’s curriculum and teach pupils how to start their own business and manage their own money in a fun and exciting way.”

They will also receive:

· Guidebooks for teachers, with guidelines and implementation tips.

· Workbooks for pupils, designed to teach them how to start their own business and manage their money.

· 'Money maps' aimed at helping pupils to plan and track their money.

· Posters aimed at advertising the market days and acting as reminders of the programme’s four principles (4spending, 4saving, 4growing and 4good).

· Certificates which will be awarded to pupils on successful completion of the programmes.

The criteria for awarding certificates will be evaluated based on how much pupils spent, saved and contributed towards good causes – including their plans for potentially growing their 'businesses'.

Pupils had a great time and sold a variety of items such as sweets, chocolates and other savoury treats.
