School makes a clean sweep in eco-awards

Kamalinee Primary School (KPS) ended the year on a high note when it placed first in the DSW clean communities competition.

“KPS submitted an extensive portfolio displaying evidence of all its environmental initiatives,” said principal, Jagatheesan Naidoo. “We were pleased to receive the Ratepayers Association trophy for the category ‘environment awareness and recycling initiatives’.

Special thanks and appreciation to all parents and guardians who assisted in all our recycling projects and to those teachers who work tirelessly to bring great honour to our institution.”

The school also registered for the Schools Environment Education Programme for the second year in 2013. This is an initiative of the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs.

There are several categories for the awarding of prizes. A team of adjudicators visited the school where they viewed the extensive portfolio complied by the eco-team. They were so impressed by what they saw the school was awarded the environment literacy award.

“We were also the winning school in the green schools categories, which is the overall winner,” said principal, Naidoo.

In November a team of adjudicators visited to assess the school for the provincial awards. “We await these results in the New Year.”
