Get your cooking skills on the boil

AS a result of funding received from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Amanzimtoti Child and Family Welfare Society will run a basic cooking and baking course for interested people in the community.

Overall the project will run for 12 months. The first intake of 36 students for the first, month-long course is 1 March. Classes will be held three times a week for two-hour sessions at a time. A facilitator will oversee the class with the focus on skills development. “Anyone willing and eager to improve themselves are welcome to contact us. The course can help a person start a small business, generate an income and help sustain their families,” said the organisation’s Poovan Naidoo.

The society has run a similar project previously and participants have had successful, small business start-ups. “With the course under their belt, which comprises simple, basic, healthy cooking, participants can establish little home industries, which does not need a lot of capital to start up.”

According to Poovan, with the high unemployment rate, it is an opportunity to help people become more employable. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn a bit of cake icing and decorating techniques, to make their baked goods more professional-looking, which they can sell at a higher price. A certificate will be awarded at the end of the course.

If interested, contact the society on 031-903-5171.
