Team Flamingo hooks another boost for cancer fight

Crew donate winnings to cancer sufferer

Team Flamingo’s fundraising efforts received a massive boost this week, thanks to Warner Beach fishermen.

The crew of ‘Speculate’, captain Dave Murgatroyd, Kenny Moore, Greg Thompson and George Murgatroyd won the top 10 invitational fishing competition at Cape Vidal on Friday, 7 March and donated their prize money to Kevin Hay.

Toti paddlers, Ross Fountain and Brett Hadiaris started Team Flamingo to raise funds for their friend Kevin, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and to raise awareness of cancer.

At the fishing competition’s prize-giving on Friday night, when Dave announced the team’s decision to donate their winnings to Kevin, numerous other top 10 teams came forward to also donate to the cause. “It was unbelievable,” said Dave. “We went there on a mission to win the competition for Kevin. We felt it was the least we could do for him and his family would appreciate the support. It was amazing to see the guys come forward to also support him.”

Jan ‘couta’ Coetzee organised an auction of a luna tube at the prize-giving, which helped boost the donation.

“This is much appreciated,” said Kevin. “The support from the community has been unbelievable. I was a bit hesitant when Ross first approached me with the idea of Team Flamingo, but once it started, it snowballed and it’s been absolutely amazing.”

On Sunday, 9 March, ex-Warner Beach residents and friends of Kevin also took part in the Stadium to Sea 10km walk in New Zealand to raise funds for Team Flamingo.
