Death of Frank Hartry
TOTI resident and prolific letter writer, Frank Hartry died in the early hours of Saturday morning, 8 March, in Kingsway Hospital, after a long battle, which started when he suffered a major stroke in the middle of 2013.
Mike Higgins, who met Frank in 1961 in Bulawayo, where they qualified and gained their SAS Wings together, paid tribute to him. “He soon proved himself to be one of the fittest and toughest men in the squadron, and it came as no surprise that he fought tooth and nail, against all odds in his battle to survive. Many others would have given up, well beforehand. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him.”
Chairman of the SAS Association of Southern African, David Padbury also paid tribute to Frank in a letter of condolence to his family. “The legend that was the man will live forever in the hearts and minds of all of us and we will remember with warm affection the greatness of Frank, from friendships made and kept, to the daring exploits of a man who lived up to the motto ‘who dares wins’. Frank not only stood by this great challenge to men of the SAS, but encouraged others by his values, bravery and dedication.”
Many readers will remember Frank, as he regularly wrote in to the Sun.
He is survived by Julie and their three sons, Dean, Leroy and Ryan. “He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The Hartry family express their utmost gratitude for all the love and support they have received in this difficult time,” said Julie.
