THE Spartan Sporting Cricket Club is celebrating a memorable season following an outstanding performance recently in the CMCA ELIXILABS T20 League, where the club entered U11, U13, and U18 teams.

As a non-profit community-based cricket club, Spartan Sporting takes pride in developing young talent, with more than 90% of its players being current or former learners of Athlone Park Primary School. The tournament highlighted the success of the club’s growing partnership with the school and showcased the quality of players emerging from the development programme.

The U11 team delivered an impressive campaign, narrowly missing out on a place in the final after a hard-fought semi-final defeat. Despite falling just short of the final, the young team earned praise for their determination, skill, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The talented U15 squad participated in the U18 league, competing against older and more experienced opposition throughout the season. In a remarkable achievement, the young side went on to win the U18 league, underlining the strength of the club’s player development programme and the character of its young cricketers.

Spartan Sporting’s players featured prominently among the tournament’s top 10 run scorers, bowlers, and all-rounders, demonstrating the depth of talent being nurtured within the club. One of the tournament’s standout performers was Tahir Shaik, a former Athlone Park Primary School learner, who dominated the competition by winning the awards for best bowler, best batsman, and player of the tournament. His outstanding performances earned him prizes valued at about R5000.

Adding to the club’s list of achievements, Zachary Myburg, another former Athlone Park Primary School learner, recorded the highest individual score of the tournament. Spartan Sporting is affiliated with both the KZN Cricket Union and the eThekwini Municipal Cricket Union.

Sporting relies heavily on sponsorships, donations, and community support to provide playing equipment, coaching resources, transport, facility costs, and opportunities for young players to compete at higher levels. The club is appealing to local businesses, community leaders, and individuals who share a passion for youth development and sport to partner with the club through sponsorship or financial support.
