Cash-in-transit heist robbers set car alight

Robbers set own vehicle alight, after robbing armoured vehicle.

AFTER stealing money from a cash-in-transit vehicle, robbers set their own vehicle alight in Rana Road, Isipingo on Monday evening, 2 June.
“At about 7pm, a G4S Security vehicle was travelling along Rana Road when a Mercedes Benz drove into their armoured vehicle. When a security guard alighted from the vehicle, he was attacked by several men who robbed him of his firearm and assaulted him,” said Capt Thulani Zwane of the KZN police media centre.
According to Zwane, occupants of a white van also stopped during the incident and dragged a second security guard out of the armoured vehicle. One shot was fired during the incident.
The robbers removed cash boxes and poured petrol over the Mercedes, setting it alight, before fleeing in the van.
Isipingo SAPS is investigating a case of armed robbery and no arrests have been made.
eThekwini fire department’s Mobeni sub-station responded to the blaze. The Mercedes was gutted.
