Mandela Day sparkles at MOP

Children and adults enjoyed a fun-filled day.

THE children and adults of Mother of Peace (MOP) in Lower Illovo were treated to a fun-filled day where a programme was developed around what sponsors and volunteers wanted to contribute towards 67 minutes for Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July.

“We felt the true spirit of Ubuntu and the excitement of many who want to lend a helping hand and to do good for the community,” said MOP’s general manager, Iris Canham.

The morning began with story-telling sessions for the younger children followed by an inspirational career talk for teenagers, facilitated by FlowSA. The Fire Department Training Unit in Illovo conducted an educational and fire talk that was informative for both children and employees.

Javelin Trucking provided a delicious braai and gave the children an opportunity to experience the thrill behind the big wheel. Trained dogs sparked the gentleness, nurturing and true nature of the inner child, adding value to a rare experience. Volunteers from the Toti fire department added to the thrill, inspiring children to new heights just by the presence of many men and women in uniform.

Mamela Consulting worked hard to clean a classroom in preparation for much-needed renovations to optimise the education facilities. Donations of groceries and clothing were received from volunteers and sponsors. The day ended with a foam party hosted by the fire training centre.

“MOP thanks all who participated in a memorable Mandela Day, for adding sunshine to their hearts and for giving the children the time, space and inspiration to dream.”
