Teacher’s touch rugby skills to see her play for SA
AN Amanzimtoti High School teacher has proven her skill at touch rugby by being selected to represent South Africa.
Telise Cousins has recently will play for the South African mixed touch rugby team.
The mixed national team consists of three men and three women. Telise attended her first South African traning camp in December and was selected to the side at the end of June. “I’m ecstatic and really excited about making the team. I can’t wait to go out there and play for my country,” said Telise.
Telise will be part of the mixed touch rugby team representing South African at the Federation of International Touch (FIT) Touch World Cup in April next year in Coffs Harbour, Australia. “It would be great to beat Australia and New Zealand at the world cup. I’m looking forward to gaining experience and to see touch rugby at an international level,” said Telise.
The 24-year-old first started playing touch rugby in 2010 with provincials. “I’ve always enjoyed rugby. I love the fast pace of the game and the fact that it keeps you fit,” said Telise. She came to enjoy rugby through her mother Karin, who is also a rugby enthusiast.
The former Kingsway High School pupil who holds a bachelor of education also referees rugby matches. In October Telise will referee the US national tournament in Orlando Florida, USA. Her next goal is to obtain her level three qualifications as a referee in August. Touch rugby is mostly self-funded. To be able referee at the US nationals in October and to compete at the FIT World Cup next year, Telise needs to raise funds towards her travelling costs. Anyone who wants to help with funds or sponsor the SA team with kit can contact Telise on 078-383-8520.
