Butting heads over parking for the disabled

This person ingeniously created a parking for themselves by parking between two cars already parked in the special bays outside the Absa entrance to the Galleria.

EDITOR – Being a legitimate user of parking spaces designated for users of wheelchairs, I have often had the desire to write this letter.

However, the innovative person driving the blue Polo was the final straw that made me put pen to paper, or finger to mouse as it were.

This person ingeniously created a parking for themselves by parking between two cars already parked in the special bays outside the Absa entrance to the Galleria. The space between his/her car and the next was barely enough to open the car door.

Refusing to believe that people are totally selfish, inconsiderate, and lazy, I decided it was time they needed to be educated as to the reason ‘Parking for the Disabled’ is necessary. Let’s face it, the biggest untruth in print is that a fine will be imposed on one using these spaces illegally, so maybe we can appeal to their common sense once they know how the need for special parking originated.

The whole crux of the matter is simply the width of the parking space. Imagine if you are in a wheelchair and come back to your car and have to wait for the driver of the car parked next to you to leave before you can get into yours. So please – whether you are at church, the doctor, or simply shopping, do not even consider taking a parking space for the disabled if you are not entitled.

You have the rest of the car park to choose from. We have one or two spaces. And don’t decide that if I am not there when you get there, I won’t arrive five minutes after you have taken my space. The chances are that I will.
