Willing hands sign up at trauma unit open day

More than 50 people visited in a two-hour period.

AMANZIMTOTI Trauma Unit had a successful open day on Tuesday, 5 August, with more than 50 people visiting the centre in a two-hour period.

“Visitors have a keen interest in our work. Several people signed up as new volunteers in various capacities. One woman signed up and started as a volunteer on the spot,” said centre manager and social worker, Gail Schreiner.

The visitors were from various walks of life, some from the community, others who are committed to local churches. “It was good to see a steady flow of people. No organisation can survive without willing hands.”

The trauma unit’s core focus is is to provide shelter for victims of domestic violence, family therapy and counselling and debriefing of victims of crime and violence. In the coming months, the centre aims to roll out integrated programmes focused on training and empowerment. “One of the programmes we will concentrate on is the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children. We want people to know and exercise their rights.”

According to Gail, there are more exciting plans in the pipeline.

The trauma unit is open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 3.30pm. Call 031-903-7777 during office and after hours emergency.
