Budding school chefs rewarded for top menu

The judges were impressed with their three-course menu.

BUDDING chefs, Isabel Smit and Mikayla Lazarus, pupils at Kingsway High, did their school proud at a cookery competition two weeks ago.
The duo were one of 20 teams chosen nationally and the only team from KZN to participate in the Pick n Pay cookery competition at the Prue Leith Academy in Pretoria, from 4 to 5 September.

Although they did not win, they walked off with the prize for the most interesting menu. For their efforts, they each received a R600 voucher, a Kenwood mixer, Italian wine glasses, a chef knife, recipe book and other gadgets.

“I was excited, but quite nervous as we were the only team from Durban,” said Mikayla. However they held their nerves and produced a stunning three-course meal in three hours. The competition is only open to grade 11 pupils and the school is now on the hunt for at least two more teams to enter in 2015.
