Toti musos’ band on the rise

Yorke are in the process of being signed by Universal Music.

Toti musos, Jordi van Dyk and Bryn Scott are riding a wave of success with their band Yorke, with their first single ‘Goodbye Gravity’ currently playing on 5FM and the music video on Youtube.

They are also in the process of being signed by Universal Music.

The band consists of Jordi (vocals and guitar), last year’s winner of the Converse Get Out Of The Garage competition, Bryn Scott, who was one of Gavin Hughes’ drum school students, Joel Kenrick (guitar) and Dean Wilkie (bass guitar).

“We are all very excited about ‘Goodbye Gravity’ receiving airplay. It shows that our hard work is starting to pay off,” said Jordi.

“We are still in the negotiation stage of being signed, making sure that the contract we sign is the right one for us. It’s definitely a dream come true. Not that many bands get approached by a label and the fact that it was Universal, our first choice, has to be the best part. We really are humbled and feel honoured that we got this opportunity.

Yorke has been a work in progress since 2012. Before then, individually we’ve been a part of the formation of various music projects contributing to the SA music scene.

Our sound is something you can relate to – it’s colourful, intellectual, genuine, hopeful, diverse and fun.”

Jordi and Bryn both grew up in Toti. “I had the privilege of attending Amanzimtoti High School. It really is a great school and has contributed a lot to who I’ve become. Bryn went to Kingsway High.”

The band is based in Durban and got their name from an As Tall As Lions’ song called ‘Ghost of York’. “I remember myself and a friend listening to the song and us both thinking York would be such a good band name. Yorke just looks better on paper.”

They hope to launch their first EP sometime next year. “It seems we’ll be heading back into studio at the beginning of the year. Perhaps the EP might become an album. We should release something next year.

Myself and Jordi write the music and lyrics. I write the basic structure or lyrics of the songs and then I take them to the band.

Jordi has the following advice for young musos in Toti: Believe in your music first and then other people will. Work hard and practise as much as you can.

Realise that although Toti is a beautiful place, there is a whole world out there – pursue it.

There are definitely a few things I miss about Toti – the chilled life, the beaches, the quarter caramel toastie at Warners, the long walk down Beach Road and let’s not forget Funland – that place has a bunch of my money.”
