A Toti resident is dismayed by the state of Toti main beach after a municipal employee knocked over a retaining wall with a payloader.
Alan Gray suspects the employee was tasked with the removal of beach sand on the road that lifeguards and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife use to access the beach.
However, the retaining wall as well as a rehabilitated dune and protective fence, was destroyed and the mortar and bricks left on the beach.
“This dune was rehabilitated about two or three years ago,” he said. “Vegetation was planted to keep the sand anchored. It was a pointless exercise and no effort has been made to clean up the rubble left after the wall was destroyed.
This is the main thoroughfare for holidaymakers to use to get to the beach and now we have a broken wall, and bricks and debris left on the sand. Even the paving of the road was broken by the payloader.”
A parks department employee confirmed a TLB, which had cleared the sand off the road as emergency vehicles were having difficulty getting down to the beach, was responsible for the damage last month.
