Community rallies to support new NPO

The next community meeting is at Zanzibar Restaurant on Thursday, 15 January at 5pm for 5.30pm.

THERE was a good response to the call for community participation from residents living between Athlone Park and Umkomaas to join ‘My Sapphire CommUnity’, a new non-profit organisation.

“Our December meeting was well attended by a group of passionate locals who are all keen to make a positive difference. Community participation as a means of driving positive change was discussed,” said Glynis Rathbone, the driving force behind the project.

There was a short presentation on Warners Action Group (WAG), which had enjoyed much success in raising the profile of Warner Beach between 2000 and 2010. “WAG engaged with and was well-supported by ward councillor at the time, Stanley Xulu, as well as various municipal officials. eThekwini Municipality’s economic development unit was brought on board and in 2009 the Warner Beach development strategic intervention and urban design framework report was produced.”

Some phases of the intervention have been implemented to the delight of residents and visitors to Warner Beach. ” ‘My Sapphire CommUnity’ will be following up to find out when other phases of the detailed strategic intervention will be rolled out. Whatever your interests and passion – the environment, animal welfare, the elderly or perhaps music and art – you’re invited to play your part in making a positive difference.”

Yvonne Dixie who attended the December meeting has already initiated a monthly full moon walk between Baggies and Winkle beaches. The inaugural walk on a balmy summer’s night was enjoyed by more than 35 people of all ages, plus two lucky dogs.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 15 January at 5pm for 5.30pm at Zanzibar Restaurant in Warner Beach. Complimentary snacks and a cash bar will be available after the meeting.
