Pink cancer campaign goes into overdrive

The Khanya Hospice cancer awareness campaign kicked off on Thursday, 16 April at Scottburgh Mall.

“Madelein van Heerden of Surfers Paradise surf shop in the mall, who is a Hospice volunteer, has taken on this challenge and her aim is to get all local businesses and business people involved in sponsoring and wrapping pillars in the mall – all in aid of Hospice and the cancer awareness campaign,” said Khanya Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald.

“Thanks to Scottburgh Mall manager, Lorraine Scheepers for her support with this initiative. Just think how great all the pink pillars will look – it will certainly make a statement.”

Aneska Dupont of Amanzimtoti Rotary and volunteers in cities around the country and different parts of the world will participate in helping Hospice with the huge fundraising initiative. The campaign will run until National Woman’s Day on 9 August.

“Madelein, Aneska and Hospice will focus on selling pink material in aid of cancer awareness and the work that Khanya Hospice does,” said Neil.

People are urged to wrap trees in pink in front of their houses and offices and surrounding areas. “Just wrap anything in pink. We need to create an awareness and we are sure people will take note of our fight against this dreaded disease.”

This initiative will help raise most-needed funds for Khanya Hospice, which offers free palliative nursing care to patients diagnosed with cancer, on a daily basis.

“Cancer is a serious matter, full stop. To be diagnosed with cancer can be traumatic, not only for the patient, but for the family and friends as well.”

To be a cancer survivor is a luxury a lot of people do not have. There are many patients who do not have medical aid and have very little, if any, financial support. Then this battle suddenly becomes a creature of a totally different nature.

“Helping those who need it most is therefore the driving force behind the ‘pink trees’ initiative,” said Neil. “The reality is, there is a great need out there.

Can you imagine if there are rows and rows of pink trees down your street or in your area? That will send a serious message to everyone. We are serious about resisting and fighting this disease and offer support to people who need this, but we need your support to do so.”

Where can you start? Call Khanya Hospice and contribute your first R100 for five metres of pink material. Aneska has bought one kilometre of material for this initiative. Challenge neighbours, work colleagues, family and friends and wrap trees, pillars, fences or drape the material in front of your house or office. You can also buy any bright pink material from your local material shop and donate money to Khanya Hospice.

“People can get their friends and families involved,” said Neil. “You can participate in this fundraiser from the comfort of your home or office. We challenge volunteers, housewives, students, sports and motorcycle clubs to get involved,” said Neil.
