The Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) is on a fundraising drive to purchase a thermal imaging camera.
The camera picks up a thermal (heat) image of a person whether it is used in the day or night, unlike conventional night vision goggles.
CCPO operations manager, Leon Joone was fortunate to experience the pros of using one when he completed a month of special duties with a camera on loan.
“If a suspect hides behind a tree, we would not be able to see them at night. But with the thermal image camera, it picks up his body heat and he is still visible, even behind the tree,” said Leon.
“This is especially important in Toti, where we have lots of bush paths. I used the camera and it was successful. We monitored suspects without them even being aware we were there, watching them.
It can also be used as a tool to clear out bushes. It can also be used as a safety tool because you can observe suspects in total darkness, monitor them coming in or going out, and see whether they are carrying any property or weapons.
Using the camera, I realised its effectiveness to combat crime. It is a worthwhile tool to have.”
The cost of the camera is R60,000, but committee member, Paul O’Neill said the CCPO can utilise a smaller device, which is effective up to 300m to 400m, as it operates in an urban environment. This camera costs about R30,000.
