Help MOP leave no child behind

Sponsor a child to grow health services at Mother of Peace.

MOTHER of Peace (MOP) in Illovo, which is home to vulnerable and orphaned children will re-launch its sponsor a child programme in July.

The programme will carry the tag line ‘no child left behind’ and will focus on the individual development of a child, breaking free from the cycle of vulnerability to an enabling environment of growth and support.

The programme will help the children gain access to specialist services and psychosocial development tools. Although there is an on-site infirmary to address physical health concerns, MOP has seen a growing need for psychosocial support.

“Investing in each child for less than R10 a day (R299) a month will allow us to grow the health services available at MOP. For all our children to gain access to these services, we are looking to match 60 of our children with sponsors. New registrations start in July and commitment ranges from three months onwards,” said general manager Iris Canham.

As MOP is at a new stage of growth, assistance will be appreciated in the following areas:

  • Maintenance supervisor and maintenance assistant for property and equipment.
  • Tutors for maths, accounting and physical science for high school.
  • Creative arts teachers and instructors.
  • Psychologist (volunteer service or discounted rate).
  • Occupational therapist to assist with assessments and implementation of a programme.
  • ECD advisors.
  • Mentors and inspirational speakers.
  • Camp facilitators and funding for camps.

Equipment needs are computers in good, working condition; outdoor equipment for playground and gym; tiles for refurbishing bathrooms and clothing and shoes for older boys.

Financial contributions are needed for sponsorships for staff development courses for housemothers and support staff and donations for the craft studio.

If able to assist, contact Iris on 031-916-2299 or email iris@motherofpeace.org.za.
