Scarves warm trees ahead of Mandela Day
Locally, scarves were knitted by the Catholic Women's League.
TWENTY colourful scarves were tied on trees at Toti Civic Centre as part of the 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement on Thursday, 9 July.
“The scarves were knitted by members of the Catholic Women’s League,” said local ambassador, June Cowan.
The movement distributed scarves around the country at various locations at the same time. In the run up to Nelson Mandela Day, this is another project of the movement to keep South Africa warm.
The Knitwits of 67 Blankets of Nelson Mandela Day were called upon a few weeks ago by founder Carolyn Steyn to knit scarves for distribution. The call was answered and the scarves were distributed in various towns by tying them onto trees, lampposts and fences in the identified areas.
Pedestrians and commuters are encouraged to take a scarf for themselves as they were made with love and goodwill and are meant to keep someone warm.
