Welfare lauds ‘women of worth’
Regular shoppers at the organisation's charity shop were given a treat for Women's Day.
ABOUT 15 women who are regular shoppers at Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare Society’s charity shop were acknowledged for their ongoing support at a special tea on Wednesday, 5 August for Women’s Day, which will be observed on Sunday, 9 August.
“Many of the women have been buying from the shop for years, and we wanted to express our appreciation to them,” said senior social worker Sandra Govender.
The women tucked into tea, coffee, cold-drink and cupcakes. They were also handed small gifts.
Many of the women hail from Illovo Township, Umgababa and surrounding communities.
“These are ‘women of worth’ who are the breadwinners of their families. While some buy the clothes for their large, extended families, others sell in their communities to earn an income to be able to support their families,” said Sandra.
Many hold down jobs as domestic workers and make their purchases early in the morning before work.
“Women keep families together and this is what these women are doing. We wanted to spoil them with tea and cake.”
Proceeds from the charity shop are used to buy food for a number of families who are on the society’s books.
If anyone would like to donate items to the shop, drop them off at 2 Hall Road, Warner Beach, next to Kingsburgh library. For more information call 031-916-2274.
