Cyclist raises funds for Red Cross

SA man tackles long road to raise money.

CAPETONIAN Gaven Sinclair passed through Amanzimtoti and South Durban on his epic journey of self-discovery in a bid to raise funds for the Red Cross.

Setting out on 15 August, Sinclair still has about 10 months of his journey ahead of him, but remains positive.

“I have met the most hospitable and kind people on my tour and it has been the most liberating experience of my life,” said Sinclair.

He decided to cycle from the Cape to Cairo because he wanted to make a difference while challenging himself personally.

Coming from a corporate sales marketing background, he went into sports development for children a few years ago and has never looked back.

The 42-year-old, who is an avid runner, said the first two weeks were the most gruelling, as he had to adapt to cycling.

“The most embarrassing part of my trip was in Port Alfred. There I was half asleep, leaning on the bicycle when I came to a sharp turn and went flying head over handlebars. Thankfully, no-one was around to witness my fail.

Then, while cycling through the Wild Coast, I was going along cattle paths in a ravine, through spiderwebs at head height, hitting into spiders, while imaging all kinds of creepy things might come out of the foliage at any time – that was scary.”

Sinclair has moved on up the coast on a route that is not predetermined, but he is excited to go forth and see more of the continent.

Anyone wanting to Sinclair on his journey is welcome to. Follow him on Facebook (Gaven Sinclair) or go to www.gavenpedals.co.za for more details. To donate to the Red Cross go to www.redcross.org.za.
