Walk for water this weekend
Entrance is free, but event organisers request donations of containers of water.

A two kilometre cross-country community walk starting and ending at Lords and Legends will be held at 2pm on Sunday, 24 January to raise much-needed water supplies for the drought-stricken villages in the Eastern Cape and Free State
Entrance is free, but event organisers request donations of containers of water.
Participation is at your own risk and children must be accompanied by an adult.
Dogs on leashes are welcome, however, don’t forget your poop scooper and yellow bandana or ribbon for dogs who don’t like to be approached
“All water collected on the day of the event will be transported in conjunction with the Water Shortage SA (WSSA) group,” said organiser, Reena Soloman. “It has established a list of towns, schools, old age homes and farmers who need water.
We have found a contact person in the Clocolan, Lichtenburg and Clarence areas that will be able to receive water and then distribute it into those areas. This depends on Skankane Transport that offered to transport the water free of charge, otherwise the water will be sent to the WSSA central collection point where the water will be distributed to the Free State and Northern Cape towns and farmers.”
If anyone has empty five, 10 or 25 litre containers suitable for water, contact Reena. “We have had many offers of assistance with rainwater from tanks and we need containers to transfer the water into. Every drop counts,” said Reena.
Only use five or two litre bottles and no milk bottles. Water bottles must be marked with a ‘DW’ – drinking water for human consumption – or ‘TW’ – tank, tap or rain water for sanitary or animal use.
Drop-off points for donations have been made available – Salajees Hardware in Commercial Road in the Toti CBD, Amanzimtoti Cares in Kingsway, Warner Beach, close to Victory KwikSpar, DTS Security at 85 Kingsway in Warner Beach, Wakefields at 392 Kingsway, Amanzimtoti, Hypersure Insurance Brokers, 4 Winklespruit Road, Winklespruit or the councillor’s chambers at 423 Kingsway, Amanzimtoti. Alternative arrangements can also be made with Nicolene on 084-638-1604.
“I have also been approached by one of the local schools which wants to start a challenge to all school children to bring two litres of water to school to donate to our cause,” said Reena, who can be contacted on 031-903-8948.
