Hijacker sentenced to 12 years behind bars

They threatened the husband, tied him up and fled the scene with a cellphone and the couple’s vehicle.

A hijacker responsible for the theft of a vehicle and cellphone at Winklespruit beach on 30 March was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment in Durban court.

“On 30 March at about 10pm, the victims were parked in Winklespruit beach parking lot when they were approached by three men who came out of the bushes, armed with firearms,” said Toti SAPS communication officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.

“They threatened the husband, tied him up and searched his wife, after which they fled the scene with a cellphone and the couple’s vehicle.”

A case of hijacking was opened at Toti SAPS. Sanele Chapane (18) was later arrested and charged for hijacking and the vehicle was recovered.

Chapane first appeared in Durban court on Monday, 4 April and subsequently for trial. He was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, of which five years was suspended for five years.

Investigating officer Cst Shezi of Amanzimtoti detectives secured the successful conviction.
