Police negligence probe after man found hanged

Errol Palmer committed suicide just hours after stabbing his son-in-law Hennie van Niekerk.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating a case of police negligence after a man hung himself in the cells at Amanzimtoti police station, when police allegedly forgot to conviscate his belt.

Errol Palmer committed suicide on Tuesday, 3 May, just hours after stabbing his son-in-law Hennie van Niekerk (32) twice in the heart during an argument at their home.

Hennie’s wife Natasha (26) wants to dispel rumours he committed suicide. “Hennie died in Kingsway Hospital. He didn’t commit suicide.”

Errol was taken into custody and three hours after the incident, was found hanged in the police cell at Amanzimtoti police station, after police allegedly failed to confiscate his belt when booking him.

Hennie leaves behind three young children – Summer (7), Annabelle (5) and Trinity (2).

“I just want to let everyone know Hennie didn’t kill himself, he didn’t want to go,” said Natasha.

“The matter is currently under investigation. No comments with regards to the allegations,” was all Toti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy would reply to the Sun’s queries regarding the incident.
