Toti NGO shop robbed

The thief had defecated on the carpet in the shop.

Amanzimtoti Cares (AC) is counting the cost after a robbery at its Warner Beach shop on Sunday night, 22 May.

The thief disarmed the alarm and broke a window to gain access to the premises. According to CCTV footage, he entered at 5pm on Sunday and only made his exit at about 5.30am on Monday morning.

AC provides food parcels to families in crisis who are battling due to job loss, retrenchment or illness. Staff work hard to secure donations of foodstuffs and they often battle with food shortages to provide for the families in their care. They sell donated goods at the shop to bring in much-needed income.

“He took tents out of their bags and used the bags to transport foodstuffs, our kettle, portable radio and CDs,” said Jeanette Greyvenstein who runs the shop. “He must have also took clothing, but we haven’t gone through everything yet. He also left a black refuse bag outside the shop with a jacket and other goods inside.”

When Jeanette opened the shop on Monday morning, she was in for an even bigger surprise as the thief had defecated on the carpet in the shop. “I don’t know why he did that as there is a toilet. It was absolutely disgusting.”

By Monday afternoon, Jeanette was still waiting for police to arrive to take fingerprints.

“Fortunately we donated our TV last week,” said AC’s Edna Blom. “Either way this robbery has been very damaging to us.”
